This is just another example of treating the symptom and not the cause. Ok, so that flag won’t fly at the capitol, but that is just one place. The flag will still fly at people’s homes and businesses. The flag will still be painted on the side of buildings and trucks. The flag will still be available for sale as t-shirts, belt buckles, bandanas and cell phone cases. The flag still flies because racism is an inbred genetic trait of some white people. Taking that flag down didn’t make 15% of racist whites in South Carolina less racist or not racist at all. This is not a solution. It’s a band-aid on a gaping wound.
I went to Mississippi this past weekend to visit my mom and we discussed how being upset over the flag really doesn’t change anything. It’s a false sense of security because racism and the violence that ideal brings isn’t wrapped in the confederate flag. Most of the time the racism black people experience doesn’t come with a side of confederate flag waving. As we drove down some random highway to Grenada, MS I recall seeing 3 confederate flags. One was flying on a pole in a nicely manicured lawn, one was painted on the side of a business that went by Dixie something or another and the other was embedded in the State of Mississippi’s flag itself. YES, THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI HAS THE CONFEDERATE FLAG INCORPORATED INTO IT’S STATE FLAG. For blacks who live in the South, the confederate flag is something you see regularly but it’s no use in fighting over it because it is just a symbol. It doesn’t change a racist person’s heart. The lack of a confederate flag doesn’t keep us safe. So miss me with this we’ve overcome because the flag will no longer fly over the South Carolina capitol. Shit is still real. Here are some states that incorporate the full confederate flag or elements of it into their state flags:
Mississippi Flag
Georgia flag 1956-2001
Alabama Flag
Arkansas
Florida
