I was watching the Strolling Cecile and Emeke short on Youtube and a sista brought to my attention this wonderfully ignorant holiday in the Netherlands called Sinterklass.
Their version of Santa has a black sidekick named (Zwarte Piet) Black Pete.
To my ears its a racial slur. The Dutch version of Nigger, Jiggaboo, or Pickaninny. So the mayo-saxons (as Gazi calls them) dress up in black face, complete with afro wigs, red lips, and large gold earrings and accompany Sinterklass (Santa Claus) as he does what he does. They are in essence dressing up as Santa’s sidekick, Zwarte Piet.
Zwarte Piet is supposedly a Moor, hence his black face. To circumvent the “racist” card some Dutch folks have said that the black face is due to the soot of chimneys…..bitch please! Gawd forbid a white person feel uncomfortable for mistreating Black people. And BTW, why isn’t any other part of Zwarte Piet’s body dirty if he indeed came down a chimney?
The fact that they are holding on so tightly to the stereotype/image shows their inabi
lity to adapt to changing times because they have never had to adapt due to their white privilege. Black people have had to adapt as a means of survival, therefore brothers and sisters in the Netherlands have had to choose their battles wisely. Those who speak out against the racist depiction and caricature are met with hostility while the white people who put on black face and parade around the streets on December 5th are applauded as keeper of tradition and mythology.
You know what. Maybe we should make up a holiday called Witte Pete de Pedofiel and parade around the streets dressed as catholic priests in white face with boners running behind little boys. Bet they won’t like that shit!
This may be a far fetched idea. I really don’t know if this’ll fly, but how about you dress up as a character without mocking the skin tone of an entire race of people. Wat dacht je van die shit!
