I did not let James Brown happen again! Stevie got Pipes! I just went by myself. Ledisi, India Arie, Robin Thicke, Mary Mary and Mosaic were really good. And the super surprise of the night…MICHELE! Yes! She is just so cute and a very dynamic performer. I love the faces she makes. She is so animated and seems really humble. And girl can blow.
Robin Thicke sounded really good. He is pasty and was trying to be sexy. He sweats a lot. He was talking about how all of the kids were screaming for the Jonas Bros and said he is a Jonas Uncle. His rhythm is a bit askew. The beat is in his knees. His knees move on the beat and then his feet follow like 3 milliseconds later. The foot comes down on the beat, not the knee. Why was I on the verge of tears for like half of India Arie’s set? Ledisi was flawless. Ricky Minor was there. Stevie’s daughter Iesha has such a beautiful voice. It’s classic. The way she carries herself is classic like old school Toni Braxton meets Lisa Fischer. Mosaic was an acapella group. They sang Wanna Be Startin Something. Stevie sang I Can’t Help It…and I didn’t break down. I have really avoided that sing. It hurts really bad. Mary Mary had just came back from singing at Tyler Perry’s moms’ funeral. Ledisi had popped in from a prior engagement and rushed off. But them two songs were firah! Stevie sang I Love You More with Kimberly Brewer. That is like the best Christmas song in 20 years. That song is so pure and good and beautiful. I find simple things cool, but Stevie and I do the same mum mum mum mum mum mum mum mum mum mum vocal exercise. SWEET! I’m really trying to practice now.
He also made a joke about putting his foot up (don’t quote me now) his son’s ass for messing up the words to his song. They were singing Ribbon In The Sky. The son can sing, but sounds amateurish. It was beautiful to see them interact like that. I hope Stevie is a Really great dad. We don’t have enough of that these days. He had a total of 5 kids on stage at some point during the night. If I am on LA next year, I am so like totally going again. Sucks Charlie Wilson didn’t show. I wonder what happened. The Jonas Bros weren’t even all that bad. The music was way too loud and distorted and inaudible most of the time. The youngest looking one has a nice voice from what I could hear. Wonder what will happen when it changes. They sang Superstition with Stevie. He put that synthesizer Voice Box on the piano and got it all funky. He also sang Ave Maria in Italian….NICE!
